In football, the numbers are meant to mirror each other.

By that, i mean, offense to defense. It doesn't work the way you might think it does from my description, but that's what their numbers are based on.
Their position.

Linmen: 50's to 90's.

Ends: 80's

Backs: 20' to 40's

Quarterbacks: 0 to 19

This is usually how it works. There are exceptions.

The player will usually pick his own personal number within these limits.
their position
College doesnt matter but pros its Defensive line 90's or 70's. Or-line: 50's,60's or 70's. QB 1-10, running cback 20-49. LB-50's, Db's 20's or 30's or 40's. Punters kickers usually single digits. WR-s 80's
a lotto system they draw ball whit numbers on them************
he chooses or he gets a number assigned to him in alphabetical order
Incollegethere is less rule on what # a player can wear, so you see players like kickers have 90's or LB's with a 6 or something. But in the pros there is a set #'s for diferent positions. Like QB's 1-19 O line is 60-79 WR's I think has to be double diget 10-19 or 80-89, D line 70-79, 90-99. I'm not sure the exact numbers for every position, but they have a rule for it. Thats why Bush is #25, because RB's can't have a single diget # less then or over 20-49.
player picks but there are certain numbers for each position
Numbers 1 to 19 are worn by quarterbacks, kickers, and punters.

Since 2004,[5] Wide receivers are also allowed to wear numbers between 10 and 19 if they so choose, even if there's an 80-89 number available.

Numbers 20 to 49 are worn by running backs, tight ends (when an 80-89 number is unavailable), cornerbacks and safeties.

Numbers 50 to 59 are worn by linebackers and offensive linemen.

Numbers 60 to 79 are worn by members of both the offensive line (the tackles, guards and centers) and defensive line (the defensive ends, defensive tackles or nose guard).

Numbers 80 to 89 are worn by wide receivers and tight ends.

Numbers 90 to 99 are worn by linebackers and defensive linemen.

Numbers 0 and 00 are no longer used
