Why can a NBA or NFL player and coaches be fined for their comments?

In a land of the free and home of the brave where the right to free speech is used often and defended passionately, why can the NFL and NBA fine players and coaches for comments about rules or teams or anything else they deem taboo?

Workers can't insult their bosses and get away with it. They'd be risking their job or a raise or bonus. Players/coaches are doing a job. If they insult the refs or the league commissioner, they can't expect to get away with it. but these players and coaches are talented and nobody wants to fire them. Anyway, they're fined the amount of money that they probably use as toilet paper on any given day, so it isn't a big deal. It's just a message that they, and every other player and coach, have to respect their bosses.

They do that for all leagues. they fined wnba coach for saying the refs were stupid, Bill Lambier.
Well this is a day in age where people are more careful with words and NBA/NFL coaches and players are role models. They are supposed to make the sport more popular and they have a commitment to the leagues.
contract stuff i guess
